Song of the Day (23): I Pity the Fool – Bobby Blue Bland

Song of the Day (23) - I Pity the Fool by Bobby Blue Bland

Don’t know why he never became a bigger star. Recording in Memphis, he mixed all the streams of music that flowed into that town: blues, soul, country, jazz and a little swamp sound. After listening to the Rev. C. L. Franklin, Bobby told Peter Guralnick that “That’s where I got my squall from— “Aretha’s daddy.”

When you’re ready to add to your book list, check out Guralnick’s Feel Like Going Home Portraits in Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll wherein he interviews and profiles many of the early blues and rock pioneers, most of whom have since passed. He also wrote the definitive biography of the King.
