Song of the Day (136): (Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay – Otis Redding

Song of the Day (136) - (Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding

Otis Redding spent most of his career performing high energy shouters. But in the summer of 1967, while living on a rented houseboat in Sausalito, California, he started writing these introspective lyrics. He carried them back to Memphis and the Stax studios where Steve Cropper, producer and lead guitarist for Booker T and the M.G.’s, helped him finish the song. He cut the first track on November 22 and then returned to the studio on December 7 for some overdubs. He died three days later in a plane crash while on tour in Wisconsin.

The song became a posthumous hit in 1968.
