Song of the Day (139): Boom Boom Mancini  – Warren Zevon

Song of the Day (139) - Boom Boom Mancini by Warren Zevon

Warren Zevon, one of rocks sublime and essential songwriters, tells the story of boxer Boom Boom Mancini with wit and vivid detail blending facts and insights to capture the tragedy and resilience in his tale.

When Alexis Arguello gave Boom Boom a beating
Seven weeks later he was back in the ring
Some have the speed and the right combinations
If you can’t take the punches, it don’t mean a thing

The song does not ignore his fight with Duk Koo Kim that ended in Kim’s death. Zevon understands the nature of both the boxing game and perhaps our lives:

They made hypocrite judgements after the fact
But the name of the game is be hit and hit back

Dylan has covered this song live in his nod to Zevon’s genius.

On a side note: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will always leave out some deserving entries, but the fat that Warren Zevon has not been recognized invalidates the whole concept.
