It is New Year’s Eve and for many years now, they play this song when the ball drops in Times Square at midnight to bring in the New Year.
Written by John Kander and Fred Ebb, the song first appeared in Martin Scorsese’s 1977 film “New York, New York” sung by Liza Minelli. Sinatra first performed it publicly in October 1978 at a charity event at the Waldorf-Astoria, where it received an overwhelming response. He went on to record it for his 1979 album “Trilogy: Past Present Future” and the song has been connected with him ever since.
In the early 1980’s, George Steinbrenner (“The Boss”) owner of the New York Yankees became enamored with the song and began playing it on the public address system after every Yankee game. Soon, the team developed a system of playing the Sinatra version after Yankee victories and the Liza Minelli version after losses. The practice ended in 1996, when Minelli complained about being associated with losses.
