Song of the Day (186): The Way It Is – Bruce Hornsby and the Range

Song of the Day (186) - The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby and the Range

Growing up in rural Virginia, Hornsby witnessed ugly instances of racial injustice, horrors that left a profound mark. Those memories welled up to inspire this song. His piano playing and the multi-instrumental work of David Mansfield (guitar, mandolin, violin) make for a smooth and infective melody that almost masks the bite of the lyrics nor the sadness in recognizing that some things never change.

Well, they passed a law in ’64
To give those who ain’t got, a little more
But it only goes so far

‘Cause the law don’t change another’s mind
When all it sees at the hiring time
Is the line on the color bar
But who knows
That’s just the way it is
Some things’ll never change
That’s just the way it is
Oh Don’t you believe
