Song of the Day (190): These Arms of Mind – Otis Redding

Song of the Day (190) - These Arms of Mind by Otis Redding

Luck just happens except it doesn’t. We need to put ourselves in a position for the luck to occur and then we need to take advantage of that opportunity.

Let’s go back to Memphis in 1962. Otis Redding has a mob driving for guitarist Johnny Jenkins. So it happens that a recording session at Stax records ends early. Otis Redding asks for the chance to sing a song, just one song. The musicians agree – and they are an all-star group: Jenkins on guitar, Booker T. Jones on organ, Steve Cropper on piano, Lewie Steinberg on bass, and Al Jackson Jr. on drums.

Redding breaks out this song and the room grows hushed. This is a song that people need to hear, that no one can resist.  “These Arms of Mine” becomes Redding’s first single and first hit.
