Song of the Day (194): Mandolin Wind – Rod Stewart
Oh, the snow fell without a break
Buffalo died in the frozen fields, you know
Through the coldest winter in almost 14 years
I couldn’t believe you kept a smile
In even the most wonderful live, there will come hard times. We will get knocked down. What matters is that we get back up and keep getting back up. I’ll agree with Victor Frankel that we need to find the purpose, the meaning that can give us a reason to get up.
That meaning may come in love, devotion to another, someone that matters. And having that other, that life partner, certainly makes life not only bearable, but possible. To find yourself on the frontier it the coldest winter in 16 years and your partner never leaves, keeps smiling. No matter how cold and harsh the universe may be, having that partner who listens, who confirms that what you say and think and do matters, that can make all the difference.
That’s what Rod Stewart understands in this song. It is an ode to the love that makes life bearable and possible.
When the rain came, I thought you’d leave
‘Cause I knew how much you loved the sun
But you chose to stay, stay and keep me warm
Through the darkest nights I’ve ever known
