Song of the Day (197): Got My Mojo Working – Muddy Waters

Song of the Day (197) - Got My Mojo Working by Muddy Waters

Muddy Waters first heard this song sung in doo-wop style by Ann Cole in 1956. Muddy reshaped it as a jump blues song. Released on Chess Records in 1957, the song broke through with his performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960. That’s the version I included here.

From the opening piano chords played by Otis Spahn, this song grabs you. It’s Muddy bragging about his mojo – his power, his sexual energy – only it doesn’t work on you. So, he’s going to overwhelm you with this song. That’s James Cotton on the harmonica and Dizzy Gillespie stepping in with the trumpet.
