Song of the Day (203): I’ll Be Seeing You – Billie Holiday

Song of the Day (203) - I’ll Be Seeing You by Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday can break your heart. Holiday released her version of this song in 1944 and think of how many listened thinking of a lover across an ocean fighting a war. She puts voice to their longing and the way love can overtake us.

Sammy Fain (music) and Irving Kahal (lyrics) wrote this song for a 1938 musical, “Right This Way,” that only ran for 15 shows, but the song persisted. Holiday picked it up and made it her own, singing as only she can.  She demonstrates what a singer can do: using the lyrics and music as written as the launching point to convey emotion, meaning and intent.
