What a life Marianne Faithful led. In her teens, she became an “It Girl” around London, breaking out on her own singing “As Tears Go by.” She fell in love with Mick Jagger and the two of them cavorted around the globe.
She ran from that world, falling into an abyss of heroin addiction and isolation. A handful of years later, she climbed out of the darkness, scarred, her voice no longer the lilting sound of angles, but a deep, rasping guttural sound that gave resonance to the new music she made. She broke out again in 1979 with the album “Broken English” and then morphed into a chanteuse, singing in clubs and cabaret. Marianne passed this week at the age of 78.
I first heard this song in the film “Montenegro.” Written by Shel Silverstien and owned by Faithful, it reveals the fantasies and broken heart of the narrator, who at age 37:
At the age of thirty-seven
she realized she’d never
ride through Paris in a sports car
with the warm wind in her hair
