Song of the Day (219): Stay a Little Longer – Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys

Song of the Day (219) - Stay a Little Longer by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys

You watch the bus pull into town and run outside to see Bob Will and his Texas Playboys step into your street wearing their nifty suits and big hats, bringing magic and joy with them. And when they take the stage, morphing big band music into western swing, you can’t stand still. As the song goes, “Bob Will is still the king.”

Bob Wills and his traveling band, featuring Tommy Duncan on vocals, regularly outdrew Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey. They were a big deal and set the stage for decades of music to follow.

This irresistible little nugget is more than just a courting song, it tips into that genre of pushing the girl to hook up.

Stay all night stay a little longer
Dance all night dance a little longer
Pull off your coat throw it in the corner
Don’t see why you can’t stay a little longer.

It’s true country fare with images from the farm.

Grab your gal pat her on the head
If she don’t biscuits, feed her cornbread
Gals around Big Creek, about half grown
Jump on a man like a dog on a bone

Stop, you’re making me blush.
