Love will lead to extremes; it will have us do things we would otherwise think crazy. Our singer goes to Memphis tracking down his lost love, unable to live without her. He’s asking everyone he finds in a murky world full of paranoia, are you a friend or a rival? He’s got to profess his love, got to understand why she left, got to convince her to love him again. He’s in full throes of that delusion that the depth of our love can make someone love us back. 

We never know if he finds her, if they reconcile, but that doesn’t matter. The essence is in the love that has him dropping everything to pursue her. Once again, we cannot be wise and in love at the same time. 

Tom T. Hall wrote and released this song in 1969. The next year, Bobby Bare rode it to the top of the country charts. Many have recorded it in including
