This song may be a little anachronist what with Spotify, YouTube and SiriusXM, but you get the idea. There are those times when we feel utterly alone, when the world may spin by us and we’re like a goldfish in its tank watching all the action unable to join in or connect. Nanci Griffith certainly had her times in the doldrums, but she could always find solace in the music.
Here she is offering an exhortation, to herself and to us:
When you can’t find a friend
You’ve still got the radio
Particularly as teenagers, how many times did we wind up alone in our rooms, unable to express what we were feeling even if we could find someone who would listen, yet we always had the music, some song, some album, some artist who, if only for a little while, could fill in that hole we felt.
Billy Stirngs and Molly Tuttle do a lively cover of this song.
