Song of the Day (314): I Never Will Marry – Linda Ronstadt with Dolly Parton

Song of the Day (314) - I Never Will Marry by Linda Ronstadt with Dolly Parton

What a sweetly sad song. Her man has left town on the last train, that long, slow whistle blowing as he pulled away. She’s bereft with a hole that can never be filled.

In her sadness, she notes how everything changes from the weather and a young man’s heart, everything except her love.

This song came up out of the hills and the Carter Family made it famous. Linda Ronsstadt recorded this version, her voice giving it the right mix of strength, vulnerability and long. Dolly Parton sings background.

There’s a beautiful version that a very young Linda Ronstadt sang with Johnny Cash on his television show. It makes you want to hear more form this pair.
