Song of the Day (105): A Coat of Many Colors – Dolly Parton

Song of the Day - A Coat of Many Colors by Dolly Parton

Sometimes the big, fun public image of Dolly Parton obscures her talent as a songwriter and singer. “Coat of Many Colors” takes inspiration form her impoverished childhood in Tennessee. It’s a wonderful story song with the details that bring it too life and it goes right to the edge, but does not fall into sentimentality.

She wrote the song in 1969 while on tour with Porter Wagoner. Unable to find any other paper, she scribbled the lyrics on the back of one of Wagoner’s dry cleaning receipts. Wagoner had given Parton her big break by including her in his traveling show, but also held her back from going off on other own. It took two years before she released this song, which helped launch her solo career.
