We’re coming to the end of what may be the ugliest election I’ve experienced in my now seven decades. It does not have to be that way and was not always that way. Read Whitman’s tributes to Lincoln, Robert Frost who wrote “Dedication” for JFK, Maya Angelou and then Miller Williams (father of Lucinda Willaims) reading at Bill Clinton’s inauguration and Amanda Gordon reading “The Hill We Climb” for Joe Biden.
When Mason Jennings heard that Senator Paul Wellstone and his wife Sheila (along with their daughters) died in a plane crash in 2002, he felt compelled to put his thoughts and feelings into this loving tribute. Too often today we lose the sense of humanity for our elected officials, yet Jennings captures the human spirit that Wellstone embodied. And while elected officials have always fought over different philosophies, this song speaks to the noble pursuit of the City on a Hill.
