The legendary New York DJ Vin Scelsa used to organize shows at the Bottom Line called A Couple of Songwriters Sitting around and Talking. (You can find one or two CDS that came from those shows if you search hard).
He’d get four folks tell stories, open up about technique and fears, and swap songs, frequently mixing fascinating artist (who knew Lou Reed and Roseanne Cash would have so much in common). Towards the end of every show, Vin would ask the artists to sing a song the wish they’d written. Luka Bloom mumbled that he was thinking of something from the heart by Thin Lizzy, but opted for something more primal, this tune by LL Cool J (as in Ladies Love Cool James).
What a song. It burrows deep and his Irish lilt only adds to the longing. When I got a recording of it, I drove to my wife’s office in mid-town and made her come down to the car to listen (yes, Carol puts up with a lot with me).
