Song of the Day (57): Unsatisfied – The Replacements

Song of the Day (57)- Unsatisfied by The Replacements

Is there any song that makes angst more tangible? The inchoate cry of something deep in the bones when all seems to fail. You can feel the ache. Bob Stinson’s guitar bends with the song and takes your heart with him.

Look me in the eye
Then, tell me that I’m satisfied
Hey, are you satisfied?

Written by Paul Westerberg and released on the Mats’ Let It Be album. It is a wonder they never became superstars, but to know the band is to know why: they were bent on self-destruction.

Forced by their record company to finally make a video, the only image is of their feet tapping on the floor and the vibrations of a stereo speaker.

One show I witnessed they came out almost too drunk to stand, switched instruments (Westerberg wound up on the drums) and decided to play other people’s songs, but couldn’t get past two lines. They were having a blast and no one else was.YouTube: https://youtu.be/DU6IndADEWI?si=90h1twF4UxC6TxqK
