The war (WWII) has ended and you’re sick and tired of the cotton fields in Mississippi. You’ve heard the tales of a better life up north; you’ve seen the pictures. SO many are leaving. You join them, following the river and rails north, past Memphis, past St. Louis, past Chicago and you settle in Detroit.
This is the life that led you away from home, this is the life you wanted. Only it isn’t. Nothing works out the way you dreamed, life is hard and you are alone. And you’re stuck. You told yourself you had to leave the cotton fields. You told everyone at home that you made it big. You hate living here. But to go home means you have to face the shame and embarrassment of admitting your dreams were but illusions and your bragging but lies.
And that becomes “Detroit City.”
Written by Danny Dill and Mel Tillis, “Detroit City” became Bobby Bare’s breakthrough hit in 1963, earning him a Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording in 1963
