Song of the Day (123): Last Dance – Neil Young

Song of the Day (123) - Last Dance by Neil Young

Neil Young hit it big when he released Harvest in 1972, an album full of lush, acoustic songs that included several hits.  He later said that the album took him to the middle of eh road, but life was more interesting in the ditch, so he headed for eh ditch. During the tour to support Harvest, he played new songs with lots of feedback, leaving crowds dismayed and pissed off. The recordings from that tour became his next album, Time Fades Away. “Last Dance” comes from that album: Wake Up, It’s Monday Morning.

You can hear the seeds that would lead to Tonight’s The Night, perhaps his most telling album.

During my sophomore year at college, I my dorm room overlooked the library steps and I would take to putting my stereo speakers in the window and putting an album on repeat as I went off to classes. A jerk move, but it seem fun at the time. I was trying to counter the Billy Joel sound that mysteriously became popular. People heard the Ramones, Dylan, Leonard Cohen and lots of Time Fades Away.
