Song of the Day (125): Livin’ in America – Black 47

Song of the Day (125) - Livin’ in America by Black 47

Larry Kirwan wrote and sings this song with insight and conviction of the late 20th Century Irish immigrant experience. What fun, what energy.

Lots of talk of migrants in America, noble talk from some, vilification from others. Reality and the truth are often hard to find. It has never been easy for immigrants with each new wave facing obstacles beyond crossing an ocean to find a life in a new land. Too often, the last wave become the ones giving the next group the hardest time.

Immigrants literally built this country and that pattern continues today: immigrant workers doing jobs that others turn down. Creating the Us against Them dynamic hurts us all as our anti-immigration moves hurt our society, economy and future. That doesn’t mean open borders (through John Rawls might argue that the pursuit of justice would require open borders), but it does mean that our self-interest lies in heling immigrants find that new life. Our humanity requires that too. .
