This song helped me love the Animals, making them perhaps my favorite British Invasion band. Is there any stronger declaration of independence than this song:
It’s my life
And I’ll do what I want
It’s my mind
And I’ll think what I want
You’re a teenager, fighting every force that you think is trying to corral you (parents, teachers, etc.) and you can play this song so loud that the walls vibrate because you feel but can’t express.
Few singers convey the grit and conviction of Eric Burden. Written by Roger Atkins and Carl D’Errico for Burden to sing, this song barrels straight at you with Chas Chandler’s thudding bass, Hilton Valentine’s guitar riffs and Dave Rowberry adding organ riffs that are darker and more forceful than other songs of the day. Yet it’s Burdens vocals that make the song work and drive it home.
