In 1963, John and Michelle Phillips in 1963, along with their bandmates were living in New York City. enmeshed in the folk scene, though the dreary and cold New York winter had them dreaming of California, as much as state of mind as a physical place. Their New York doldrums and longing for he west coast inspired them to write this song.
Jump to November 1965, they enter the studio in L.A. with Lou Adler prdoci9ng their tracks. They cut “California Dreamin’’” though they told Adler they intended it for Barry McGuire a friend (and singer of “Eve of Destruction). Adler had other plans. Released late that year, the song became a major hit for the Mamas and the Papas in 1966.
The sound and lyrics blend the folk music of Greenwich Village with what was then the new California sound. The Mamas and the Papas opened the floodgates.
