In November 1974, Bob Dylan called up his old flame, Joan Baez, catching her by surprise. During the conversation, he read her the lyrics to a new song, “Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts.”
The call triggered a flood of emotions Baez which led her to write this song. She recorded it in January 1975 and released it in April of that year becoming a hit on FM radio and even reaching the Top 40.
Baez is known mainly for her interpretations of folk and other writers’ songs, but she hit the right spot with this song that transcends her relationship with Dylan.
