In October 1978, I landed in Dublin early on a Saturday morning ready to start a year at Trinity College. Jet lagged, I slept much of the day away, then hauled myself into Dublin, using James Joyce as a tour guide and wound up at Davy Byrne’s pub, jammed wall to wall, filled with smoke and the hubbub heard in bars round the world. Over to the side, one could not miss this tall black man, a rarity before immigration hit Ireland, and you could feel the charisma glowing. Phil Lynott had a Guiness in one hand and a wry grin on his face. Would it be too much of a cliché to say there was a twinkle in his eyes. I knew enough not to interrupt, but he looked so cool and just seeing him added to the enthusiasm I had for the year ahead.
Thin Lizzy mixed their Irish heritage with soaring guitars and Lynott’s gritty yet tender vocals. Their joy and camaraderie pours out of “The Boys Are Back in Town.”
