This is one of Aretha’s signature songs. It has a great origin story.
Jerry Wexler tells how he was thinking about the idea of a natural man. He’s eating lunch at the Oyster House in New York City and as he walks out, he sees Gerry Goffin driving by. He calls out to Goffin, “Aretha Franklin needs some new songs. Why don’t you write a song called ‘Natural Woman’?”
Goffin gets to together with his wife/songwriting partner, Carol King, and they write “Natural Woman.” Grateful for Wexler’s suggestion, they gave him a songwriting credit.
To bring the story full circle, when the Kennedy Center honored Carol King, Aretha Franklin performed “Natural Woman” to honor her.
