Song of the Day (216): Accidentally Like a Martyr – Warren Zevon

Song of the Day (216) - Accidentally Like a Martyr by Warren Zevon

Paul Niles taught me this song while sitting on a bench in Estes Park, Colorado on a hitchhiking trip that took us up to Rocky Mountain National Park. I was a love sick, moaning over the girl I lost. Paul has always been ahead of me on the path towards wisdom, like a Buddha with a sense of humor, a weak spot for the Red Sox and the ability to even now hit the curve ball.

Zevon gives us what the best songs and poems do: they articulate what we feel in our hearts.

We made mad love, shadow love

Random love and abandoned love

(Ooh) Accidentally like a martyr

The hurt gets worse

And the heart gets harder

The days slide by

Should have done, should have done, we all sigh

Never thought I’d ever be so lonely

After such a long, long time

Time out of mind

Warren Zevon wrote so many wild, fun songs, but this one is different in its vulnerability and tenderness.
