It’s my youngest son John’s birthday. He got his name from hearing Van Morrison introduce John Lee Hooker and its echoes of Johnny Cash and Jack Kerouac. Our John has grown to be a fan of Johnny Cash.
Johnny Cash earned the nickname, the “Man in Black” because he always wore black, quite a contrast to other country stars of the day in their flashy outfits, many designed by Nudie. He wrote this song to give meaning to his choice of color.
I wear the black
For the poor and the beaten down
Livin’ in the hopeless
Hungry side of town
I wear it for the prisoner
Who has long paid for his crime
But is there because
He’s a victim of the times
Our John shares a lot with the sentiments of this song, much of his life driven by questions of what he can do for others. Our John teaches us more every day and Johnny Cash’s earthliness resonates in him far more than just the name.
