I didn’t grow up in a house full of music. My Dad would put on stacks of Christmas records during the holidays and the occasional Broadway album. The radio carried the talk radio of the day, Rambling with Gambling anyone?
As the eldest, I didn’t have much guidance when it came to music, but I did discover Tom Jones when he had a TV show, “This is Tom Jones.” He made his first hit, “It’s Not Unusual,” the theme song for the show, so it played all the time. I loved it.
When I scraped together my nickels to buy my first records at Korvettes, I bought “This is Tom Jones” and a Glen Campbell record. I lost them at a party in the early 80’s when a friend decided I shouldn’t own them and threw that out the window of our third story walk up in the Rockaways (I’m looking at you Bernie).
I still can’t resist, “It’s Not Unusual.” Tom Jones may be my favorite Welsh singer.
Here’s a bit of trivia: Reginald Dwight played the keyboards on this song. You know him as Elton John.
