Paul Westerberg (and the Replacements) are not writing protest songs and not trying to change the world. He writes what he sees: people trying to find their way, trying to make sense in an often nonsensical world, people seeking relationships and love.
Now, something meets Boy, and something meets Girl
They both look the same, they’re overjoyed in this world
Same hair, revolution
Unisex, evolution
Tomorrow who’s gonna fuss
And tomorrow Dick is wearing pants
And tomorrow Jane is wearing a dress
Future outcasts and they don’t last
And today, the people dress the way that they please
The way they tried to do in the last centuries
And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know, love each other so
Androgynous
The U.S. government has decreed that there are only males and females, which runs counter to biology. It runs counter to reality. It denies our humanity and ostracizes people trying to live their lives. Once again, we are allowing our fear of what we do not understand to rise to hatred. And once again, many say they are doing so in the name of God. How awful.
I do not fully understand when someone tells me they are fluid. I do not understand how one recognizes that they were born in the wrong body. But I do not need to understand everything. And I do not need to fear. I just need to accept people as they are. I need to love. Let’s offer hugs instead of hatred.
It is not hard. Accept people as they are. Stand up to ignorance, fear and hatred. Choose love.
And listen to the Replacements.
