Janis Joplin did not write this song, Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Berns did and she did not record it first, Erma Franklin did that, but Joplin made it her own. She conveys an awful mix of desire, pain, love and anger. She gives her all and it’s not enough, but she just can’t quit the man. It’s sublime and full of hurt. She knows what she’s doing and yet has no control over the longing that drives her.
But each time I tell myself that I, well, I can’t stand the pain
But when you hold me in your arms, I’ll sing it once again
I said come on, come on, come on, come on and take it
She’s strong. She’s delirious. She’s in love.
The slashing guitars of Sam Andrew and James Gurley drive the song deep into our minds and hearts.
