The story goes that Warren Zevon avoided doctors for decades before showing up in a physician’s office as he was feeling run down only to hear that he had stage four lung cancer and would soon die. (The moral of the story: had he not seen the doctor, he’d still be with us.)
What’s a song and dance man to do? Make more music. Too ill to travel to the studio, his family and friends brought the studio to him. Beginning in late 2002, he set out to record what would be his final album with a mix of songs written by others (yes, it includes “Knocking on Heaven’s Door”) as well as his own compositions. This song came last, a benediction of sorts, a wish, to find eternity in the every day moments given meaning by the people he loved. His voice failing, Zevon pushed through with a grit that only adds to the resonance.
Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
When the winter comes, keep the fires lit
And I will be right next to you
Engine drivers headed north to Pleasant Street
Keep me in your heart for a while
These wheels keep turning, but they’re running out of steam
Keep me in your heart for a while
We all live next to the cemetery and life slides by faster than any of us can imagine. Hug someone you love today, make sure they feel your love.
The album, “The Wind,” came out on August 26, 2003, and Zevon passed away on September 7th.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame documents their illegitimacy every day Warren Zevon is not recognized.
