In 1970, Elton John and his songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, came to Los Angeles to record what would become the album, “Madman Across the Water.”
Taupin would later talk about the impact the trip had on his life and his music. In his own words, his lyrics became less British and more cinematic and open. His personal life shifted when he fell in love with Maxine Feibelman, a young ballet dancer and costume designer and the pair married in 1971.
Maxine was more than just a muse, she accompanied Taupin wherever he went and that included the studio. She was there as Elton John took Taupin’s lyrics for “Tiny Dancer’ and added the music.
Years later, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Maxine recalled the magic of those sessions: “We’d go to the studio together, and I’d watch them create from nothing. I didn’t know what Bernie had written until I heard Elton sing it. When he played ‘Tiny Dancer’ the first time, I just froze. I didn’t realize he had written that about me until everyone else pointed it out.”
Early Elton John is the best Elton John. Enjoy.
